Me and my Bear by MelDraws Me and my Bear by MelDraws
A self portrait, I guess? Me and my bear. Boy, I wish I had a bear. Life would be sweet with a friend who was a bear. We would roam the countryside together, drawing and sketching and mauling and biting.

Our theme music would be The Odd Couple theme. I mean, when you think about it, a giant, furry, ferocious beast with big teeth and claws, and a little runt with a pencil and a sketchbook, that's pretty odd.

I really do wear socks like that.

Did I go overboard on the textures on this? I think I might have, and might tone it down next time.

Very inspiring, nice work. I can totally identify with this; I'd be lying if I said I haven't fantasised about something similar. The bear is beautiful.

Sketching about while leaning against some fuzzy inspiration. Totally there. Completely and utterly awesome incarnate. I really can't say anything better than that besides "snazzifitic." So I will. It's snazzifitic.

no, actually, i think the textures are great. it's a good thing that you used similar textures all over. i'd love to have a bear too. once when my boyfriend was a kid his dad met a performance bear and his handler on the street and tried to buy the bear (they lived in an apartment at the time, so the idea of that in itself is hilarious). so he brought the man and his bear home to try and negotiate a price. the bear took the elevator, and when his mom opened the door she found his dad hand in hand with a bear. they brought it in, sat it down on the living room couch and gave it a big cake to eat. then sanity prevailed and his mom ordered his dad to get rid of the bear. i really love that story, and i always laugh when thinking about it.

that's an interesting story... and I think it's totally awesome and hilarious that he wanted to buy a bear!

There's an Australian organisation that raises money to help dancing bears and their handlers in places like India and Thailand and such. They take the bear to their rescue facility where they take care of em, and provide the handler with enough money to start a new career. [link]

thanks for sharing the story, made me laugh out loud :D

wow, they do great work. and hey, rove is a member of the organisation too! :P

to be honest i haven't seen a dancing bear on the streets for years... so maybe programs such as this are working.

I don't think the textures were overboard, they don't cause any visual confusion in the composition so there really isn't a problem with it. Nice mood and composition, very construction paper-cut-out, nice idea and execution. The only thing is that the characters do not seem grounded, they both seem abotu 4 inches off the ground. Perhaps one darker shadow to hold them down. Nice work.

I agree with you about the shadow, this was probably my biggest struggle with this piece!
